550 Washington Street (St. John’s Terminal Redevelopment)
New York, NY | 2017–2024
SCOPE:
Structural design and construction engineering for the 1.1M SF redevelopment of St. John’s Terminal into Google’s NYC headquarters. Scope included a 9-story overbuild above an existing structure and retrofit of four podium levels.
The project introduced bridge design principles into building design through a post-tensioned core and required complex coordination between new construction and active restoration. We led construction engineering and temporary works review, supporting an expedited construction schedule while maintaining structural integrity throughout.
OUR ROLES:
As construction engineering lead, Dave Douglas:
conducted preliminary investigative condition assessments,
reviewed temporary structures, both design and field erection,
provided QC site presence,
reviewed of shop drawings, and
provided QC of precast fabrication plant processes.
As project engineer, Stephanie Berrios:
worked on structural design of steel overbuild and transfer structure,
developed restoration details for the existing podium,
provided site presence both for fielding questions to engineer of record and concrete special inspections, and
participated in ongoing condition assessments to adapt original design details to field conditions.
